It was the northern part of Yeonghaebu in Joseon Dynasty and recorded as Yeongdong in the Population Census published in 1789.
Later, Yeong-ri integrted into the northern area when Yeonghaebu was renamed to Yeonghae-gun.
Yeong-ri was called Yeongol or Yeondong because it resembled the lotus flower floating on the lake, and was renamed to Yeong-dong later.
Parts of Yeongsang-dong, Yeongha-dong, Bogok-dong, Baekryuk-dong, and Baekjin-dong were merged and renamed to Yeong-dong under the administrative district rearrangement in 1914 during the Japanese colonial rule, and were subsequently incorporated into Byeonggok-myeon.
After the nation's liberation in 1945, Yeongol and Beomheung were divided into Yeong 1-dong and Yeongdong 2-dong.
Bogok and Mireukgok were divided into Yeong 3-dong.
Sseok-eun-bawi was divided into Yeong 4-dong.
In 1988, Dong was renamed to Ri.
