It was part of the northern Yeonghaebu in Joseon Dynasty, and indicated as Byeonggok-yukri and Byeonggokjin-baekseok-yukri.
Later, Yeonghaebu was renamed to Yeonghae-gun.
Following that, the northern area was called, 'Byeonggok'.
The toponym of Byeonggok means the topography resembling the sack, and Byeonggok was said to have been also called Jarisil or Poseong.
Under the administrative district rearrangement system in 1914 during the Japanese colonial rule, Byeongjin was merged and renamed to Byeonggok-dong, and subsequently incorporated into Byeonggok-myeon.
In 1945, it was divided into Byeonggok 1-dong and 2-dong.
• In Geomuyeok-ri, Byeonggok-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, there is a tale that has been passed on orally. This tale is a famous story also recorded in Yeonghaegun-eup-ji and Yeokong-paeseol of Lee Je-hyeon, and Gyonamji.
• During the rein of King Wonjong in mid Goryeo, a fisherman caught a turtle when Park se-tong, the local government official, arrived at current Yeongdeok-gun, Yejubu while he was making a local tour of Yeol-eup, and the villages handled the turtle mischievously.
• Park Se-tong looked closely at the turtle and found the letter 'King(王)' on its back. He bought the turtle from the fisher who caught it by paying him with a lot of grains, and then released the turtle into the sea.
• At that night, a gray-haired old man appeared and said, "I am the Dragon King of the East Sea. Today, my son made an excursion and was found by people. He was almost being killed, but you saved his life. I do not know how to thank you. As I am in the Dragon Empire beneath the sea, I cannot help you directly. But I will make your family enjoy the glory from generation to generation." Saying those words, he disappeared.
• Although Park Se-tong already had the moral influence and strong physique, everything worked out fine. He found greater favor with the king and ascended to the highest government post called 'Pyeongjangsa'. Hong-mu, his son, was promoted to Miljiksa of Muhasijung Pyeongjangsa. Gam, his grandson, was also promoted to the important post called Muhasijung Pyeongjangsa.
• In that way, three generations(grandfather, son, grandson) ascended to the important government post of Sijung, which was a great joy to Yejubu. The village was renamed to Geomuyeok which means that the forced labor was abolished in Yejubu.
