Nomul-ri

Nomul-ri

It was a part of Dong-myeon, Yeongdeok-ri, and also called 'Nomul'.
According to Population Census published in 1789, Nomul-ri consisted of Nomul Naedong-ri, Nomul Naeyuk-ri, and Nomul Hae-ri.
In late 1890s, those three villages were called 'Nomul-ri' as a whole, and was renamed to Nomul-dong as a result of merger of Nonae-dong in the wake of the integration of administrative district in 1914 during the Japanese colonial rule, and incorporated into Obo-myeon.
On April 1, 1934, it was incorporated into Yeongdeok-myeon due to the changes in administrative districts. Seaweed, clam, shrimps are caught in this the fishing village at the seaside.
The seals caught here were said to have been offered to the King.
Currently, the village belongs to Yeongdeok-eup.

Origin of Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong, the intangible cultural property

• Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong,(designated as cultural property on November 5, 2009). designated as the cultural property as No. 36 intangible cultural property by the Provincial government, was the folk entertainment of women which was distribute from Yeongil, Pohang to the south to Uljin to the North, and was practiced until 1930s.

• After that, it was almost stopped at the late period of Japanese colonial rule in 1940s, and was revived for a while after the nation's liberalization, and then almost disappeared slowly. In 1981, Yeongdeok Women's High School launched the process to find Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong from the artisans of Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong, and integrated the simple dance and play based on music transcription and choreography without distorting the original form. The form discovered newly was validated by the artisans and restructured thereafter, and furthermore, was handed down to the students of Yeongdeok Women's High School and performed at various events.

• Later, the Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong Preservation Association was organized in 2000, and the Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong was passed onto the women within the county. In 2009, Yeongdeok-gun was recognized as the cradle of Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong and designated it as intangible cultural property of the Province. Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong has been instrumental very much in promoting the regional culture that originated from Nomul-ri, Yeongdeok, through its performance in various events held nationwide.

• Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong consists of the sound and dance. The group dance is called, 'Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong', but is the dance with the certain rhythm, such as the Toyeong song, Saenggeum Saenggeum Saenggarakji, etc. In addition. it seems to have the different dance songs, but represents the female group dance that is synthesized into the Dalneomse, Daemun Yeolgi, Sanji Ttigi, Dongae Ttagi, Jae Balgi, Silkkurigamgi, Pulmu, Jeolguse, etc.

• Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong originated from the dance of women hand in hand to make the enemy think that there are many soldiers as the Japanese troops invaded by crossing the sea on board warships during the Imjin War. Another legend is that the women danced, praising the moon, on the day of the first full moon of the year (by the lunar calendar) which originated from Wol-Wol-Ri Cheong Cheong that means the Japanese troops led by the Japanese General Gadeung Cheong Cheong are crossing the sea.
