It was the part of Nam-myeon, Yeonghaebu and called Chuksan-ri or Chuksan-po because its geography resembled the cow.
The first record of the name, 'Chuksan', be found in Yangchonjip written by Yangchon Gwon Geun who went into exile to Yeonghae in late part of Goryeo Dynaty.
The Sajesogam Bakgangjeon indicates the name of Chuksan-rin mentioned in the title of government post called 'Chuksando Byeongseondo-Gwanryeong'.
The toponym of Chuksanpo is found in Gyeongsang-do Jiriji published in 1425 in Joseon Dynasty.
The name of Chuksanpo is also found in Sejong Sillok Jiriji(King Sejong's Treatise on Geography) that was completed in 1454.
The name is also used currently.
Chuksan-dong, Yangjang-dong, and some part of Chayu-dong, and natural communities of Ibu-dong, Tongribu-dong, Singi-dong were merged, renamed to Chuksan-dong and incorporated into Chuksan-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun under the administrative district rearrangement in 1914.
In 1945, Ibu-dong and Tongribu-dong were divided into Chuksan 1-dong.
Yangjang was divided into Chuksan 2-dong.
Singi-dong and Jukdosan were divided into Chuksan 3-dong.
In 1988, Dong was renamed to Ri.
